Africa’s elephants are in danger. Populations of Africa’s elephants are in danger. Populations of savannah elephants, found across ‘safari’ Africa including Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana & South Africa, are declining rapidly due to poaching, human-wildlife conflict and habitat loss, and in the Congo Basin, our beautiful forest elephants are already classified as critically endangered.⁣
⁣
World Elephant Day plays a crucial role in raising awareness about the problems faced by these gentle giants. It is important that we all work towards creating a sustainable and safe environment for our wildlife to thrive, sharing solutions for preventing their exploitation, and learning more about them.⁣

#DidYouKnow that Western lowland gorillas have muc #DidYouKnow that Western lowland gorillas have much thinner and less dense fur then their mountain gorilla counterparts in Rwanda and Uganda? This is primarily because it is much warmer at lower altitudes, like the forests of the Congo Basin, and the gorillas don’t need as much insulation. ⁣

⁣
The camp has undergone a small refurbishment and is looking very special. Our favourite spot has to be the new deck overlooking the baï – the perfect spot to relax with something cold and watch the bongos who congregate to drink.⁣
⁣
Standby for more images and in the meantime, check out our website for more information on staying at Lango!⁣

Meet Dean, Field Guide at Odzala Discovery Camps⁣
⁣
Dean has always been captivated by the bush and natural environment, and becoming a guide seemed like a natural progression – and a dream come true! Working in Odzala-Kokoua and living in one of the last intact rainforests in the world is a true privilege for him and he says that the bonus is being surrounded by some of the rarest animals in the world. Being the connection between nature and our guests who come to experience this awe-inspiring environment is his favourite part of the ‘job.’⁣
⁣
Dean has a real interest in birds and elephant behaviour and says that elephants in particular have a way of connecting you to your roots and changing your perspective on the natural world.⁣

What is a baï? The Congo Basin is dotted w What is a baï?

The Congo Basin is dotted with wetlands called ‘baïs’. Baï is a word from the Mbenga people, which describes a natural, often swampy, clearing in the forest with large deposits of minerals. These areas are created and maintained by the footfalls of wildlife digging for nutrient-rich water and grazing on the nourishing vegetation. These clearings hold a magnetic attraction for forest elephants by night, as well as forest buffalo, bongo and great flocks of African green pigeons and African grey parrots.

It's also a favourite spot of almost every guest to while away a few hours, wildlife-watching, take photos and just being...

Here, in the tangled forests of Odzala, it’s not just about watching the gorillas, it’s an opportunity engage with science and nature through exploration.⁣
⁣
Founded on research and conservation, our gorilla tracking experiences at both Ngaga Camp and Sangha Lodge are conscious of our impact. We believe in observation, not engagement, and connecting with the gorilla families we meet in a respectful, authentic and personal way.⁣
