Healthy forests for healthy people. Today we’re Healthy forests for healthy people. Today we’re celebrating International Day of Forests.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 March the International Day of Forests in 2012 to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests.

Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Congo Basin is the second-largest tropical rainforest in the world after the Amazon. Within the park there are critically endangered animals and over 445 bird species. The Congo Basin accounts for 18% of the world’s remaining rainforest, while the park covers an expansive 13,500 square kilometer area of untouched and rich biodiversity.

Conserving and protecting the “lungs” of our planet to ensure a healthy world for all is a key goal for us. Let’s do all we can to ensure healthy forests for healthy people.

Welcome to the Neptuno family, little one! We’re Welcome to the Neptuno family, little one! We’re excited to be sharing the first few images of the baby gorilla that has joined the Neptuno family.

According to field guide Kerri, this baby is a lot fluffier than the first time she spotted it in January!

In Odzala we can guarantee that you will experienc In Odzala we can guarantee that you will experience a range of emotions: awe, excitement, joy. You will also have FUN!

As Katie Jacholke, @katieinafrica, explains: “I think sometimes a trip to Odzala can appear only for 'real', hardy safari-goers, but we were a group of girls in our mid-30s and we had the most fun EVER! You certainly don't need to be a seasoned Africa expert to enjoy the forests of the Congo Basin; just keen to be adventurous, explore a totally different environment, and get a little out of your comfort zone...”

Field note Friday: These yellow basket fungi have Field note Friday: These yellow basket fungi have been popping up around Lango Camp and are making a very interesting case study for our guides. It seems these fungi attract flies with its sticky, smelly substance and the flies then spread the spores. For field guide Kerri this is the biggest one she has ever seen.

“I had a few people ask me why on earth you woul “I had a few people ask me why on earth you would wade up to your waist in the baï and the answer is simply because it really makes you feel as if you are part of the forest. It was the best part of the experience, hands down. Our group were talkers, and every single one of us was silent as we waded through those waters. You are surrounded by nothing but pristine forest, birds calling, snuffles, sounds, trees, leaves - and you are physically part of it all and totally ensconced in the magic.”

Katie Jacholke (@katieinafrica) paid us a visit in January and shares some of her most surprising takeaways from the trip — the biggest of which is how much fun it can be to wade waist-deep in a baï. This is what we mean when we say #immerseyourself.

It’s bongo season in the baï in Dzanga-Sangha! It’s bongo season in the baï in Dzanga-Sangha! Field guide Kerri (@kezi.in.the.congo) captured these majestic antelope on a very relaxed day in the baï. Depending on the dry season, sightings like these can be expected in September and March to April. Bongos are the largest, heaviest, and most colourful African forest antelope and sightings of them are incredibly special.

Meet Kerri, Field Guide at Odzala Discovery Camps Meet Kerri, Field Guide at Odzala Discovery Camps

Kerri started guiding in 2015 and has travelled to some of Africa’s most incredible places, from exploring untouched jungles, leading horseback safaris in Big 5 reserves, to canoeing on the Zambezi river. Growing up in Zimbabwe, surrounded by a plethora of wildlife in the country’s game reserves, it’s no wonder the bush was her natural calling!

She refers to Odzala as her Forest of Eden and we couldn’t agree more.

“Every day in Odzala is like the ultimate dream come true for any guide, and I cherish the time I
get to spend exploring the forest.”

If you’d like to explore with Kerri, follow the link in our bio for more information. If you’ve had the pleasure of joining Kerri on a Discovery, say hi in the comments!

Catch her on Instagram (@kezi.in.the.congo) or wading waist-deep in Odzala’s elephant boulevards.

Suzi Eszterhas (@suzieszterhas) recently met all t Suzi Eszterhas (@suzieszterhas) recently met all three habituated groups of gorilla that call Odzala home and she shared some of her favourite images with us:

“Each family not only had a different composition but also different personalities. Neptuno was the boldest and had some of the naughtiest youngsters, while Pluton was the biggest but embraced the longest morning naptime, and finally, Jupiter was the smallest and blessed us with the most intimate encounters as they gazed into our eyes.”

Contact us at discover@congoconservation.travel and we’ll set up the introductions between you and our gorilla families.
