EXPLORE DISCOVERY PACKAGES

”Of all the camps in Africa that I've been lucky to stay at, Ngaga Camp in the rainforests of Odzala-Kokoua National Park in Republic of the Congo is one of the most atmospheric. Built on raised platforms, the camp makes you feel like you're floating among the trees."

Activities at Ngaga Camp

Ngaga Camp is home to our Western Lowland Gorilla research team who has spent the past few decades in the forest navigating its trails and understanding its rhythms. Guests come here to share in their knowledge and experience this intact rainforest. Forest walks, night walks, night drives and more are available.

Gorilla Tracking

Founded on research and conservation, our gorilla tracking experiences at Ngaga and Sangha are conscious of our impact. We believe in observation, not engagement, and connecting with the gorilla families we meet in a respectful, authentic and personal way.

Guided forest walks

Explore in the footsteps of the great explorers at all of our camps with guided walking experiences through the pristine rainforests of the Congo Basin. These are the last jungles of Tarzan waiting to be discovered.

Viewing deck

Each of our camps offers a unique vantage point of the Congo Basin from pristine forests to savannahs, wetlands and rivers. Spend hours on the viewing deck of the main camp or your chalet observing the life all around you.

Guided night walks

Step outside and into the mysteries of the forest at night with your guide. On foot, look for nocturnal life in the treetops from palm civets to various species of galago, insects and the flickering light of fireflies. Listen to the forest and feel at one with her gentle rhythm.

Meet the community

Close to Ngaga Camp lies Mbomo and Ombo villages where you can have the opportunity to learn more about living in the Congo Basin for generations. Before you arrive, let us know if you would like to meet some of the members of these local communities and we will request this on your behalf.

Meet the researchers

An opportunity to engage with science and nature through exploration, meet members of the research team at Ngaga Camp before your gorilla tracking experience. This briefing allows you to gain insight into the ongoing research in the area, glimpses into camera-trap footage captured and an introduction to your tracker, an integral member of the research team, who will guide you to the gorilla families during your stay.

Sundowners - Ngaga

After a guided afternoon walk through the pristine marantaceae forests surrounding Ngaga, you may come across the Ngaga stream. This is the perfect spot to kick off your shoes, cool down your feet and enjoy a gin and tonic while dusk settles on the forest.

Take a dip

In the quieter, crystal streams, take a refreshing dip or cool your feet to escape the humidity of the rainforest. A unique vantage point to look for birds, you may also see monkeys or flutters of butterflies while you enjoy the cooling waters.

Moments of reflection

Take a moment to immerse your senses in this place and time. See the pristine ecosystems, hear the sounds of a healthy environment, smell the dewy humidity and promise of rain, taste the sense of wonder filling your heart, and feel connected to something greater than yourself.

Birding

With over 400 bird species in the Congo Basin, birders come here to find paradise. Odzala offers huge flocks of African Green Pigeons and African Grey Parrots as well as the elusive Great Blue Turaco and Giant Kingfisher, amidst a host of other species. At Sangha, the rare Picathartes can be found (best in October while breeding), as well as various eagles, nightjars, sunbirds and many, MANY more.

Drinks & dining

All of our camps offer a fully inclusive stay with breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and house beverages throughout. Our chefs fuse local flavours with international techniques for an array of delicious meals.

Private guides

Book a private guide for the duration of your stay and explore the ecosystem at your leisure or pursue a personal passion with our specialists in birding, photography, mammals, flora, culture and various activities. Go deeper in your understanding with a personal trusted and knowledgeable field guide at your side (additional costs apply).

Botany Bombs

The signature gin and tonic of Congo Conservation Company comes in many guises … During your explorations each day, your guide will gather different elements from the forest and bring them together in what we call ‘Botany Bombs’ – a reflection of your day of adventure.

The Forest Five

During your Discovery journey, try to spot the ‘Forest Five’ endemic to this region: Western Lowland Gorilla, Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Bongo and Giant Forest Hog.
