Activities at Sangha Lodge

Spending time with the Cassidy’s and visiting Dzanga Baï are the main attractions. Experience the elusive Forest Elephant congregating en-masse, observing their social behaviours and interactions. Spend time with the Ba’Aka net hunting, walk through the Valley of Giants, explore hidden waterfalls, kayak down the Sangha River and learn about conservation efforts, including the Sangha Pangolin Project.

Gorilla Tracking

Founded on research and conservation, our gorilla tracking experiences at Ngaga and Sangha are conscious of our impact. We believe in observation, not engagement, and connecting with the gorilla families we meet in a respectful, authentic and personal way.

Guided forest walks

Explore in the footsteps of the great explorers at all of our camps with guided walking experiences through the pristine rainforests of the Congo Basin. These are the last jungles of Tarzan waiting to be discovered.

Viewing deck

Each of our camps offers a unique vantage point of the Congo Basin from pristine forests to savannahs, wetlands and rivers. Spend hours on the viewing deck of the main camp or your chalet observing the life all around you.

Dzanga Baï

A pilgrimage destination for environmental travellers, Dzanga Baï is the finest Forest Elephant experience in Africa. This is a congregation point for vast herds of Forest Elephant and Forest Buffalo as well as rare animals such as Bongo, Giant Forest Hog and Red River Hog that seek out the mineral-rich waters found here.

Kayaking

Drift along the waterways and explore the Congo Basin from a new angle at Mboko and Sangha. Alongside your guide, explore riverbanks and forests looking for birdlife, Forest Elephants, antelope, Forest Buffalo, charismatic monkeys and more while enjoying the simple peace of the water.

Boat Cruise

The perfect way to admire the sunset over the forest at Mboko and Sangha, cruise the winding waterways with a new view around every bend in the river.

Guided night walks

Step outside and into the mysteries of the forest at night with your guide. On foot, look for nocturnal life in the treetops from palm civets to various species of galago, insects and the flickering light of fireflies. Listen to the forest and feel at one with her gentle rhythm.

Mangabey tracking

Departing from the Bai Hokou research site in Dzanga Sangha Protected Area, enjoy the astonishing opportunity to track a group of habituated Agile Mangabeys in collaboration with the WWF. The same protocols and precautions as our gorilla tracking experiences apply to this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Meet the Ba’Aka

Immerse in the hunter-gatherer lifestyle of the Ba’Aka community. Spend time with them in their forest as they go about their daily tasks of building new structures and net-hunting for survival. Learn from them and how they have adapted to their forest home - it will leave you in awe.

The Pangolin Project

The Sangha Pangolin Project is founded on research, rehabilitation and community involvement. Guests of Sangha can meet the researchers, spend time observing this fascinating species with the pangolins currently under our care, and learn about the world’s most trafficked animal.

Valley of Giants

Walk amongst some of Africa’s oldest and tallest trees in this special area of the Congo Basin and Dzanga-Sangha Special Reserve. The canopy hovers above you at 50 metres in places, that’s higher than an 11-storey building.

Sundowners - Sangha

From our new star deck at Sangha, enjoy a crisp, cool sundowner overlooking the tranquillity of the Sangha River. The gentle flow of the water is imbued with peace and the setting sun paints the sky in shades of red, orange and gold.

Moments of reflection

Take a moment to immerse your senses in this place and time. See the pristine ecosystems, hear the sounds of a healthy environment, smell the dewy humidity and promise of rain, taste the sense of wonder filling your heart, and feel connected to something greater than yourself.

Birding

With over 400 bird species in the Congo Basin, birders come here to find paradise. Odzala offers huge flocks of African Green Pigeons and African Grey Parrots as well as the elusive Great Blue Turaco and Giant Kingfisher, amidst a host of other species. At Sangha, the rare Picathartes can be found (best in October while breeding), as well as various eagles, nightjars, sunbirds and many, MANY more.

Meet Rod & Tamar

Meet the passionate family behind the conservation efforts and founding of Sangha Lodge. The Cassidys have poured their heart and souls into Sangha, with their son, Alon, who now joins them as the head guide for this camp. Spend time with this eccentric, wonderful, and hugely knowledgeable family responsible for all you can experience here on your next visit.

Drinks & dining

All of our camps offer a fully inclusive stay with breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and house beverages throughout. Our chefs fuse local flavours with international techniques for an array of delicious meals.

Private guides

Book a private guide for the duration of your stay and explore the ecosystem at your leisure or pursue a personal passion with our specialists in birding, photography, mammals, flora, culture and various activities. Go deeper in your understanding with a personal trusted and knowledgeable field guide at your side (additional costs apply).

The Forest Five

During your Discovery journey, try to spot the ‘Forest Five’ endemic to this region: Western Lowland Gorilla, Forest Elephant, Forest Buffalo, Bongo and Giant Forest Hog.

Sleep out at Dzanga

A new opportunity at Sangha Lodge, spend the night at Dzanga Baï on the research platform and wake up to sunrise over herds of Forest Elephant. (Not the most restful night’s sleep, but well worth any discomfort!)

REOPENING OF TOURISM
IN THE CONGO BASIN POSTPONED

Taking into consideration the virulent spread of COVID-19 and the recent cases of transmission from humans to gorillas in the San Diego zoo, the park managing authorities have jointly agreed that the national parks in the Congo Basin remain closed until further notice.

The reopening of Odzala Discovery Camps has therefore been postponed until 2 September 2021.
